Eye exam: It depends on the type of exam. If it's just an annual vision test, then right away should be fine. If your eyes were dilated, then you need to wait till your pupils return to normal. You eye doc should give you this information at the time of your exam.

You bet!: When we stare at something for a long time (computer screen, book, wall) we decrease the amount of blinking per minute.  Blinking pushes water on the eye (reverse windshield wiper) to coat it.  When you don't blink, the eye dries and sends a signal to the tear gland to produce more tears in order to protect the eye. It is a sign that you are staring too long. Try a break or artificial tears.

Usually Unrelated: Since you seem to be well educated as to how to use the term "scintillating scotoma" and aware of what appears to trigger the same then, you must've done enough reading or been told by the eye doc that such a symptom is much less likely associated with eye problems than it is with headache problems such as aura of a migraine.  Back to the primary for a more definitive referral if necessary.

No danger: Although it can cause eye strain and discomfort, there is no risk of blindness from being too close to a computer monitor or television. The real question is: why would you be sitting so close? You may need glasses, and could benefit from an eye examination.

Myth: Computer screen images are not harmful.  Continuous use can be fatiguing and is commonly dyring.  But there is no long term harm possible.  Otherwise we eye doctors would crowd around redmond washington (home of microsoft) and set up shop.

Dryness: Staring at a computer can dry out the tear film and lead to dryness.  Taking short breaks, using artificial tears, and remembering to blink can help relieve symptoms.

Accepted Answer

No, take breaks: The distance from the screen has nothing to do with the effect of the light on your eyes/retina What you need to do instead is make sure you take breaks. 5-10 minutes every hour away from the screen/light is adequate to rest the eyes. Don't pick up your cell phone during that time - best is to actually close eyes and let them rest, but can also just stretch, take a walk, etc.

Not really: It is a good idea to keep a normal distance to  prevent the effects of radiation from the screen, 

the effects on the eyes have not been reported in the literature to the best of my knowledge.

Double vision: There are dozens of things that can cause double vision. This could related to your scleritis and lower extremity changes. It is best to get an exam to eliminate any significant diagnoses. Start with a neurologist or ophthalmologist. Good luck.

i wear contacts that are -1.25 because i have trouble seeing faces/things clearly when they are 10+ feet away. but, 3/4 of my workday is working on a computer screen that is close up. am i making my eyes worse by wearing my contacts all day?

: It is unlikely that wearing contacts is making your eyes worse. It would help to look away from the screen, even for a few seconds, every 10-15 minutes. If you have other symptoms, it would be prudent to consult an ophthalmologist.
