New mutation: Sickle cell trait is almost always caused by a gene passed down from one parent. The parent may not even know he or she has it. Rarely, a new mutation can also occur-- a child's gene changes on its own, meaning that they didn't get it from a parent. I could not find the exact rate of these new mutations. It's rare, but it can at least theoretically happen.

Yes or Sickle cell: The sickle cell anemia is passed to a child from both parents who must have at least a single sickle gene to pass. Either parent must have trait or another hemaglobin varient that includes a sickle gene. (ss, sc, sa trait).

Accepted Answer

Yes: In order to have sickle cell anemia, a child must have inherited 2 abnormal genes for hemoglobin (the part if the red blood cell that carries oxygen), one from each parent.  There are many genetic types of "sickle cell disease", but usually at least one true sickle gene is involved.

Sickle cell trait: This is not possible - in order to have the trait one parent gives you a normal gene and the other the abnormal gene. If you have two abnormal genes then you have the disease. Having the trait offers you protection against malaria and your survival is better.

No: If neither the mother or  father of that child carries the sickle gene, they can not pass it on to their own child to give them trait. In such a case, it stopped at the paternal grandparent. The sickle mutation is  well known &amp; thought to originate in Africa hundreds of years ago. Trait carriers suffered less with malaria. A new mutation , while possible, is rare to unknown in this disorder.

Yes: Persons with sickle trait inherit a normal beta globin gene from one parent and a sickle beta globin gene from the other. They in turn can pass that sickle gene to their children; if this child inherits a normal beta globin gene from the other parent they will have sickle cell trait. If they inherit a sickle gene from the other parent they will have sickle cell anemia.

You test both to see: This is a simple test, a hemoglobin electrophoresis.If a kid has trait, at least one or possibly both parents may have it.It would be quite rare for the kid to have a new mutation and neither parent have it.

No: Both parents need to pass the genes, so if only one of you have the sickle trait (only 1 gene for sickle) then the baby  will not have sickle cell disease. He can get the trait and be able to pass it on to his/her children.

Accepted Answer

Varies: Sickle cell disease is a recessive disease. That means you have to have two of the disease genes to create the disease. 
Because you both have the trait (ss) that means there are 3 possibilities for your baby. 1) ss sickle cell disease - 25%
2) ss-sickle cell trait-50% risk 3) ss-no sickle cell mutation-25%.

Very unlikely: Most children with sickle trait are asymptomatic except their hemoglobin levels, so called iron count, stay a bit lower than normal.
