how does rhinocort and sudafed affect your ear health?

Can help: If you have eustachian tube dysfunction (problems equalizing ear pressure) those meds can sometimes help.  Sudafed is not a good medication for long term use, however, especially if you have high blood pressure or a heart problem.  Discuss with your doctor or ent.  Those medicines will generally not affect balance problems or hearing loss which is not due to fluid build up on the ear. Best wishes.

Several things: Not normal, its eustacion tube dysfunction, the tube between nose and ears to balance pressure. Mucinex, (guaifenesin) chewing gum, lots of water, and saline nasal rinse all help as well.

Accepted Answer

Both: Often combined in same pill. A nasal cortisone spray can be added and is often the most effective. Fluticasone, etc, are now generic, OTC, and about $20.

my ears have been plugged up and ringing for a month. it gets worse at night and in the morning. there is some fluid when i wake up in the morning. i tried a nasal spary and sudafed but they didn't work. will this ever go away?

You may very: well have a wax plug within the ear canal, called cerumen impaction.
Please see your primary care doctor's office so they can  examine your ears with an Otoscope   and  possibly wash out the plugs.  They also need to check for  an  ear infection.  Best wishes.

Get rechecked: It is hard to tell if you have no symptoms but if you did have fluid in your ears, Sudafed for 2 days would not likely do the job.  People with fluid in the ears usually notice a sensation of ear fullness (plugging) and/or hearing loss.

Accepted Answer

Decongestant: Oxymetozaline ( afrin, dristan, nasivin, logicin, Vicks sinex, visine l.R., sudafed om, and zicam) can all help.  Don't use more than several days in succession.  You might also try nasal rinses with neti pot (ask your friendly pharmacist).  Also, steroid nasal spray may help.

i went to quick care and they said i have fluid in my ear they have me 30mg sudafed but i have hypertension i don't think i can drink this right?

Maybe not: If you want to use pseudoephedrine, you should check your BP while taking it--it does not raise everyone's BP uniformly. Also, they recommended 1/2 dose, which may have your HTN in mind. If opt for alternative, can try afrin nasal spray to see if can open up & allow drainage, but must stop using by 5 days.

my 16 year old son has had a plugged ear (muted hearing, crackling) for the past 2 weeks following a cold. he has been taking sudafed which hasn't helped much. is there anything else he can try and at what point should he be seen. he says he isn't experie

Get him checked: As he is having hearing changes, reasonable for him to be checked now.  He might have an ear infection or fluid behind the eardrum  causing the hearing changes.  Ear infections can occur without pain.  No other special meds to take for the plugged ear.
