how does bronchitis affect the lungs?

Respiratory function: Bronchitis refers to swelling of the bronchi or conductive airway passages.  When one breathes, air is transported to the the "alveoli" where oxygen actually enters the blood and co2 is removed.  If those initial transport airways become swollen or retain secretions such as mucous, it will require more work to breath.   Also air may become "trapped" in the distant airways, impairing breathing.

i suffered from bronchitis during most of my childhood, the problem am facing now is when i exercise my lungs can't keep up and i tend to breath heavily (more than normal). can the two be related?

Yes: The label of bronchitis is often applied to kids with mild cough variant asthma. Those with this process can always have a susceptibility to lung problems throughout life although they may rarely if ever wheeze. Having a family member with asthma increases the  chance one can have such problems without active asthma.

Dont smoke/exercise: Don't smoke or expose to second hand smoke and other irritants and stay active with exercises as tolerated.And eat properly, get good 7hours of sleep and avoid fatigue.

Related?: I am not sure they are related. Are you taking any new meds? ARe you taking to much caffeine?
Are  you experiencing any life changing event?
Would think about what else is going on in your life as this does not sound like the cause!

: Permanent damage from bronchitis depends on the degree of infection and the type of organism causing it.  Viral bronchitis is generally not a cause of permanent damage, but recent studies of "long term" respiratory effects from COVID-19 infection reveal respiratory effects which at this point have not been assessed for duration.

Can take weeks: I am sorry to hear about the bronchitis.  This excess phlegm is just the after effects of the inflammatory process and can take a couple (sometime 3-4 weeks) weeks to resolve.  You could try guaifenesin 300 mg by mouth and you can take this every 4 hours if needed.  This will help break up the mucus/phlegm.  Just make sure you are not pregnant while taking this.  Guaifenesin is also called Mucinex

Pain: No, it's most probably a sign of persist lung inflammation and pleurisy. It takes time to resolve Up to 2 weeks

Cough: The chest pain may be related to muscle strain from coughing. Other causes includes inflammation of the pleura, the lining around the lungs. If you are able to exercise and without fever, your illness is resolving. 
A follow up with you physician is recommended.

recently was put on advair because my lungs won't recover 3 months after bronchitis. i can't stop concentrating on my breath and how poor it is. stres?

Possibly: If your symptoms have been worsening like this, you need to see your doctor for an evaluation to see what's going on.
