Pain: Pulled muscle, regardless of place, will cause pain. If it doesn't hurt, you didn't pull anything. Of course, there are other reasons for pain. But if pain doesn't go away w/rest, ice, compression & elevation (rice), it's best to get evaluated. If pain in back is associated w/fever, numbness, tingling, weakness and/or incontinence (loss of bowel/bladder control), need emergent care immediately.

Heat might help: Application of heat might help for pulled muscle in the back for example
I would not advise to keep hot pad for long time, and definitely not to have it applied on a swollen muscle as it might cause more swelling

Physiotherapist: Best treatment for muscle injury with subsequent headaches, is to get physiotherapy treatment, to treat the trigger points. Warm bean bags also helps with muscle spasm.

Yes: Yes shoveling snow can definitely cause strain of the back  as well as abdominal muscles .It can be strenuous especially if it the heavy wet type. Usually the pain will resolve in couple of days without any long term problems. If you continue to have problems see you doctor.

Timing is everything: Acutely rice, rest, ice , compression, elevation. All of these help shrink blood vessels and decrease the amount of blood supply and inflammation.
After 24-48 hours heat may be used to stimulate blood flow and loosen the muscle, controlled exercise, then ice to control inflammation.
Chronic you may use either heat to relax and ice for swelling and pain.

Probably more: If you are having pain and numbness in your thigh after you “pulled a muscle” in your back, it is probably a radiculopathy from the irritation of a nerve in the back.  Don’t hesitate to be seen for it.  Mri may be required.

if you pull a muscle on your right side, can it show up on a holter monitor? right when i pulled a muscle from turning the wrong way, my holter showed an arrhythmia. could the pain or anxiety from the pulled muscle cause an arrhythmia?

: You don't specify what kind of arrhythmia occurred.  Acute pain can increase the heart rate causing simple sinus tachycardia, but theoretically acute pain can cause release of enough adrenalin to cause other arrhythmias as well, although it's uncommon.

Other option: A sprain/strain is when a ligament/tendon is injured by overstretching. There may be minimal or quite a bit of damage to it. Inflammation (redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling) occurs as a natural healing process. The key is minimize further damage while keeping the area flexible/mobile. Ice massage (24-36 hours), elevation, gentle rom, motrin/advil are the keys to maximize healing.

due to wrong sitting/sleeping posture i was getting right side ear jaw & shoulder pull/pain.i started going to gym and now my neck shoulders are paining. how do i differentiate between muscle strain and slip disc.does slip disc in neck need operation?

Neck problems: Medical history, physical examination and radiographic studies would be used to determine if there was a disc injury.  Not all intervertebral disc problems require surgery. You are trying to reduce something that would require complex assessment into something much simpler.
