Tell your parents: Pinworms are not an std, but are caused by simply scratching the area around the anus or vagina.  It is embarrassing, but you can tell them you want to see your physician and go - they are very common and are often the result of an outbreak at school, camp, or work where one person infects a great many through poor hygiene.

No. Medications : prescribed for pinworms are Albendazole &amp; Mebendazole, given as a single dose that is repeated 2 weeks later.  The CDC recommends that physicians treat  all family members. Prevention  of re-infection is arduous. Pinworm eggs can be found under the infected person's fingernails, on clothes, bedding, upholstered furniture &amp; other surfaces. Medication &amp;: environmental controls. Pinworm treatments include anthelmintic medications like Albendazole (Albenza), Mebendazole (vermox) or pyrantel  (Pin-X, Antiminth). Good handwashing is important. Wash clothing that has been worn recently, bed linens, upholstery and carpeting. All family members should be treated.

None: The medical treatment for pinworms is a short course of anti-helminthic (anti-worm) drugs, usually for 3 days.  They have almost no side effects, usually are cheap, and are very effective.  There is no reason to seek alternative treatments.

Break the cycle: Though anti-parasitics work very well on pinworms, it isn't the drug that is the problem- you child is like reinfecting him/herself by fingers on the anus or placing them in an environment with pinworm eggs (i.e. Sandbox play) then placing  the contaminated fingers into the mouth without washing them. Excellent hand hygiene and vigilant watching will hopefully prevent this cycle.
