HSV-1: Cold sores are painful blisters that can occur on the lips, roof of the mouth or the gums which are caused by the herpes simplex virus (hsv-1). Melissa officinalis or lemon balm (cream) expedites healing of cold sores. It can reduce healing time by half. Studies also show that regular use can help v recurrences.  Brief supplementation with lysine 1, 000mg orally 3 x/ day at the onset can help.

i get cold sores and this last one i had left a bright red spot on my lip. like a scar. the cold sore is healed though. will this scar go away?

Yes, most likely: Most cold sores are pretty superficial and will leave a reddened area for a while which usually fades over months, not days.  If the cold sore had a secondary infection or the scab was picked, it can injury the deeper layer of skin and cause it to scar.  This generally doesn't happen

Secondary to HSV: Cold sores are secondary to HSV (herpes simplex virus-1). It is sexually transmitted usually from kissing an infected individual. 85% of adults have this virus even though it may not fully manifest as cold sores. Although not curable they can be controlled with topical and /or oral medication. Monogamy is really the only prevention. Multiple partners increases your risk.

The first episode  can happen anytime but differs, usually appearing as small blisters in a close grouping near the lip.After healing, the virus hibernates in nearby nerves.The virus can returns to activity but the sores appear as a patch along the lip.In both episodes, the virus is being shed from the active wound ; be contagious.

Possible herpes?: One possibility is herpes, which is a viral infection that lives in a nerve tract once it enters the body and may recur from time to time. Other possibilities may relate to pressure on the area or other dermatologic causes. Less obvious cause could even be gluten intolerance. All conjecture until a dermatologist actually sees it and hears more about the history.  Don't try to treat it yourself.

It is unpleasant: I believe that some people feel there is stigma if you develop herpes simplex type ii (genital). I don't think there is a taboo about herpes simplex i (oral).  However, many people know that they are contagious and so they may not want to have contact with someone who has an  active cold sore lesion.
