Time: Depending on the etiology of the eye infection, it just may be time you need.  Viral infections must run their course and this could last 2-4 weeks. Unfortunately there are no specific medications for viral eye infections.  Bacterial eye infections should be evaluated by a health care provider for topical antibiotics.

Yes: Hot tubs require a lot of care. If they are not cleaned, and the water "shocked", bacteria and other organisms can grow. The conjunctiva is a mucous membrane, and can easily become infected. I caution all patients with recent eye surgery to avoid hot tubs. In addition contact lens wearers must remove their lenses prior to swimming or hot tub use.

Discharge & reddness: Symptoms of an eye infection include a discharge from the infected eye (clear or cloudy), reddness, irritation, lid swelling, and/or pain. Some eye infections, if not diagnosed properly, can lead to significant eye problems, including blindness. You should consult your doctor if you notice these symptoms.

Irritant rxn: Unless the material you are using is contaminated by germs, it is unlikely any eye infection is related. Many do get small bits of eyeliner or other makeup into the sensitive spaces around the eye (folds of the conjunctiva) this can cause swelling &  redness that is irritant based rather than infective. Generous use of eye wash or artificial tears can remove the debris & help the irritation fade.

Check with your doc: Upper respiratory tract infections can lead to eye infections.  If frequent infections, should have your blood chemistries and immune system checked out.  Improve hygiene and also reduce stress or any factors weakening your immune system.

Coincidence?: It may be that you simply contracted your own eye infection with a different virus, independent of your interaction with the person 2 weeks ago. But also sometimes different viruses have long "incubation periods" and it may take some time for the virus to cause you symptoms after you acquire it.

Could be herpes: Herpes can cause ocular, or eye symptoms.  As herpes outbreaks can occur during times of illness, it is possible that you are having recurrent ocular herpes outbreaks.  You definitely need to be seen by your doctor during one of these episodes to obtain a proper diagnosis.  Untreated ocular herpes can lead to worse illnesses in the eye such as keratoconjunctivis.  There are medications available!

Yes: Major studies have shown that sleeping with your contacts in increases the risk of a contact lens related eye infection.
