how do you deal with severe arthritis in the knees on a day to day basis?

Stay active: Arthritis is like rust in the joint.  Activity and flexibility can help keep the joint mobile and lubricated. Unless contraindicated, tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can be very helpful.  Some people get good relief from glucosamine chondrointin, but evidence is conflicting.  Talk to your doctor, an injection of cortisone or a series of injections with medications like synvisc may also be helpful.

i have tried nsaids .  was  previously on 800 mg ibuprofen  3x a day.  caused stomach issues.  was put on tramadol.  no  difference in pain despite taking it 4x a day.  have  been given cortisone shots .  helps with pain for approx 2 weeks, then back to pain and discomfort.   pain scale varies between 4 to 7 on daily basis depending on activity.   i need to lose weight but knee pain prevents me from vigirous exercise

Knee pain: First you need a diagnosis as to the cause of your knee pain. Patients can tolerate NSAIDs when taken with foods, but taking medications like omeprazole or famotidine may allow you to better tolerate them. As you found, intraarticular injections of corticosteroids offer short-lived relief.  If you haven't already done so, I recommend consulting an orthopedic specialist for diagnosis &amp; treatment.

Possibly: Lortab is hydrocodone with acetaminophen(tylenol). It is an narcotic painkiller and it can be used for this purpose if indicated. Usually it is best to try non-narcotic medication  first if possible due to the potential for side effects and dependency problems however in the right patient it can be helpful.

Yes: Although for chronic treatment, it's not an ideal therapy and can make things worse. I typically only use it as a last resort and in very select situations.

Try alternative med.: I'm an internist, and also practice functional medicine, so my answer will reflect both practices. "moderate/severe arthritis, " and "significant amount of pain rx's" means smthn is not working. Correct diagnosis? Osteo vs rheumatoid arth? If you have correct diagnosis and still not working, explore treatments like magnesium, fish oil, avoid processed foods salt and sugar, water, green tea.

Not likely: Alcohol should not effect your knee arthritis directly. Alcohol and anti-inflamatory medications can hurt your stomach ( ulcer). "falling down" drunk has never helped anybody's knee. Do not drink to excess.
