if i play sports like football and basketball and i have asthma, will i be asthma free once i use my inhaler and go back to playing the game soon?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Depends on what is triggering your asthma.  If you have "exercise induced" asthma/bronchospasm, then you should be asthma free if you use an albuterol inhaler 20 min before a game.  If your asthma is triggered by allergens an infection, then those triggers need to be addressed before you will be asthma free.  If you work with your doc, you should be able to go back to sports without any symptoms!

my son only gets asthma when he plays sport, he has a puffer which works but doesn't solve the issue. would you recommend chinese medicine?

Accepted Answer

No: your son needs evaluation, it sounds that it isn't only Exercise Induced Asthma, more strings are attached. He may very well need a controller medicine in addition to the rescue puffer that he uses before exercise or only as needed, or he may have a nose/sinus disease, etc..kindly see an allergist/asthma specialist, check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist/immunologist in your area, goodluck

my daughter wheezes when playing sport & is now sick and wheezing and chesty. i used to have asthma as a child, is it likely she has? can gp diagnose?

Yes/yes: Asthma is a variable spectrum with some so mild they never knowing they have it to those who depend on daily meds to survive. It is heavily influenced by genetic inheritance with different forms within the same family. Exercise induced bronchospasm is part of that spectrum. Any primary care doc with enough experience can verify this or send you where you need to go for testing.

a question about my 17 year old.  she  played competitive sports for years and never had a problem with shortness of breath.  now,dr. thinks she could have asthma. no wheezing.  just some shortness of breath that started yesterday. thoughts?

: There are several viruses that cause inflammation of the bronchioles/bronchi and can lead to wheezing. Asthma is a chronic problem which involves more than one episode of wheezing. If your child has had several episodes of this wheezing and shortness of breath, then the diagnosis is justified. Occasionally other wheezing and shortness of breath are treated with the same meds as Asthma.

Refer to answer: Your ac joint may be sprained. Usually to need small steroid shot for it; or you may have instability. See you dr. Both can be diagnosed with examination.

Nail fungus: Unless you had a trauma to this particular nail, this is probably onychmycosis, or  nail fungus. Trauma can look similar. There are now both good topical and oral antifungals to clear this up. See your local foot specialist to see what's best for you

It depends : On which sport and how much pressure you put on your abdomen, assuming you are talking about an inguinal hernia.  If it causes pain or discomfort, you should stop immediately.  Definitive cure is surgical repair, which you will need for sure sometime during your lifetime.  Better to get it done earlier than later, when hernia is larger and operation becomes more difficult.

is it okay to play sports with a torn tendon?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Which tendon it is and what's affected.  More information needed.  Ask your doctor to verify that it is a torn tendon and not a sprain.  Remember,  wounds need time to heal and whether it is a torn tendon or a laceration - takes time.

Probably: If you have a hernia, let pain or discomfort be your guide. If it hurts, take it easy. If you find yourself limiting your activity because of a hernia, see a general surgeon it a consultation.

Caution is best: Our experience with professional sports injuries indicates a high incidence of post-traumatic encephalopathy due to repetitive head injuries.  At one point we were far more lenient, but the consensus suggests it is safer to wait up to 4-6 weeks after a significant concussion.
