i have bitter  sour taste in back of throat more noticeable when swallowing and one side of my throat is hard to swallow and looks infected. this is also accompanied with a dry mouth and lots of mucus what could this be and how do i get rid of sour ?

Dr. can check throat: New throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or stomach acid reflux. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat).

Rinse: I would think rinsing your mouth should get rid of the taste... But you may decrease the benefits of the fluoride..

: Start flossing. Brush twice daily for a full 3 minutes by the clock every day. And for goodness sake get in to see a Dentist immediately to determine the cause (other than compromised hygiene) that can be contributing to what may be gum disease.

Try this: A rinse of warm water with 1teaspoon of baking soda. Rinse for 30 seconds spit out, repeat.   A change in the acidity of ones saliva may create a metallic taste in the mouth. If this is the cause of your metallic taste, then possibly neutralizing the acidity with baking soda may help.

Stubborn symptoms: This is probably a result of having the flu recently. Sometimes when people are sick their immune symptoms become taxed and are susceptible to other viruses/bacteria taking over. You could also have a respiratory virus in addition to the flu causing the cough or it could be from invading normal oral bacteria during your illness. If your symptoms worsen over the next week see a doctor.

PND: It may be post nasal drip (pnd), some nasal sprays (flonase/nasonex for example) can be beneficial.  See your pcp.

Steroid inhaler: An antibiotic might be appropriate if one has a yellow or green nasal discharge, especially if associated with painful sinuses and/or fever.  If the discharge is clear, sinuses are pain-free, and there is no fever, a more appropriate medication might be an inhaled steroid such as Flonase (1-2 inhalations every 12 hours for7-10 days).  If symptoms persist, see your md or an ear, nose and throat doc.

Mucus: try taking an antihistamine like xyrtec or claritin (loratadine) at bedtime

Spit up mucous: When you say you "spit up" do you mean that you spit out something coming from your throat or stomach or do you mean you cough up something and spit it out.  Spitting out mucous can come from post nasal drip, mouth and throat or from stomach or from bronchial tubes or lungs.  You have to discover cause and then look for cure.  Do not smoke.  May be something simple like a nasal allergy.  See doc.
