Tetanus: While any open wound can be a source of tetanus, it is more common in wounds contaminated by dirt, feces, soil or saliva.  It is also more like to occur as a result of puncture wounds, crush or avulsion injuries, burns, or necrotic/devitalized tissue.  It is always wise to be current on vaccinations and if a person is behind who has an open wound, call your physician to get them updated.

Not always: The wound does not always have to be deep to get tetanus. Causes include wounds which are contaminated with dirt, poop (feces), or spit (saliva)
puncture wounds such as from a nail or needle and burns. Tetanus has sometimes been seen with clean superficial wounds when only the upper most layer of skin is scraped off. I wish you well with your health!

Booster time: What did you cut yourself on? How long ago did you have a tetanus shot.The chances of getting tetanus are remote, but if it has been longer  than ten years since your last tetanus shot, you can still be protected because tetanus is a slow growing organism. Get a booster if needed.

Tetanus Safety: Tetanus vaccination is available as Tdap( tetanus, diphtheria &amp; pertussis) or Td ( tetanus diphtheria). If you have received Td next time that is after 10 years get the Tdap. The safety interval is as short as less than 2 years between shots but try and wait at least 5 years to reduce side effects.

Yes: if it has been more than 5 years since your last shot or if you cant remember, you should get a new shot, sooner rather than later. If you know the doctor you went to the last time you had your tetinus shot, they probably have records and can tell you when you had your last shot. Also look out for signs of infection, like increaseing warmth or draining puss, increasing pain, etc

See doctor: If you got tetanus shot in the last 5 years or so then not to worry . You are protected .Moreover if the wound is healing well ,no fever or another problem , you should be o.k.Still if you are worried  then consult your doctor .

No shot needed.: If it's a non-rusty sewing needle, it's unlikely you will need tetanus shot.  This shot lasts 5-10 years.  If you haven't had the shot over 6 years. It;s best to get another one.  This will protect you for future deep wound or cut injuries that may put you at risk for tetanus.
