Normal growth: Testosterone causes the prostate to keep growing. Men don't appreciate this since it makes urination more difficult. Unfortunately, this falls under the category of why do we get wrinkles and why do our nose and ears keep getting bigger. It is a product of aging.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Dutasteride and Finasteride both work well to shrink the prostate. Called 5 Alpha reductase inhibitors, these drugs stop the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which causes baldness and prostate enlargement. Not a quick fix as maximum benefit is not reached for 6-12 months.

Although these medications are effective, patients that fail to improve with these medications may need a procedure.

Never: There are no household items you can use to "shrink" the prostate gland. In fact, this would be very dangerous and can cause permanent damage. It is only treated with prescribed medications or surgery depending on the symptoms. See a urologist if you have difficulty with urination.
