how can i tell the difference between a hemorrhoid and an enlarged prostate?

Examination: A hemorrhoid is an enlargement of the veins around the anus. This can be seen at the opening of the anus or may slightly internal to the opening of the anus. Prostate swelling is further in but is not related to the hemorrhoid and is not part of the colon.

Possibly: With prostate enlargement, obstructive urinary symptoms often occur gradually such as slowing of the stream, the need to strain to help force of stream and sense of incomplete emptying along with more frequent voiding.  If obstruction is severe, hemorrhoids can become more inflamed when straining to urinate, resulting in discomfort.   If this is occurring talk to your doctor.

: Would be ok, there are always exceptions, 1) High blood pressure , rectal stimulation can sometimes increase the blood pressure,.2)  Thyroid Disease : again rectal stimulation can increase GI stimulation and increase gastric motility, stimulating the GI Tract secretions, that affect the Thyroid Axis ,3)  Enlarged Prostate : stimulation of the rectum with suppository, can increase hormone level PSA

Operative treatments: Besides medications and other supplements, most urologists will treat refractory BPH with procedures such as microwave therapy, laser vaporization of the prostate, or transurethral resection of the prostate.

Depends: It depends on the degree(if any)of the bladder outlet obstruction If you have a feeling of incomplete emptying you should see a urologist who will do a uroflometry to measure how fast your flow is and a postvoid bladder scan to see if you retain urine and how much.A digital rectal exam will be done. If indicated you will be prescribed the appropriate medication. Usually an alpha one blocker.

Drugs that can help reduce BPH are alpha-blockers, 5 Alpha reductase inhibitors or a combination of the the drug classes. Another newer treatment is with daily 5 mg doses of tadalafil. See a urologist

Enlarged prostate: See a urologist (u) for treatment of enlargement of the prostate (p) gland that either can be benign or malignant. In prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatic hypertrophy, prostate gland enlargement can cause  urinary symptoms. Untreated p gland enlargement can block the flow of urine out of the bladder and can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems. If malignant, see a u for treatment.

Urinary discomfort. : Infections of the prostate manifest as pain and burning with urination and urinary difficulty. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate are decreased force of stream, delayed start of stream, dribbling, urinary frequency, urgency, and a sensation of incomplete voiding. Make sure you keep your stool soft with fiber rich foods and see your primary care physician for evaluation.

Hemmorhoids: Many people present with "piles" and this can actually be the issue or one of many other problems 
there are dietary, behavioral, hygiene modifications as well as procedures that can help with these common problems.

Both constipation and diarrhea can lead to this  condition as well

it is best if you consult with a general or colorectal surgeon to help with this matter. The symptoms are usually very different than prostate issues.
