Usually not: Astigmatism is a physical curvature aspect of the cornea and lens of the eye which in effect makes the eye oval.  The term astigmatism is from physics and is not usually a bad thing.  The correction is a reverse oval in the eyeglasses or contacts.  Most astigmatism is small and easily corrected.  Sometimes it is large or irregular and that make perfect vision difficult. See your ophthalmologist.

Good/Bad in the eye: of the beholder. Astigmatism simply means the focusing of the eye is not equal all angles around the central line of sight; more curvature one way than 90 degrees around. The +1.25 &amp; +1.75 values in the ophthalmologist's Rx for correction is the astigmatism correction in diopters (1 = the curvature needed to focus parallel light rays to a point 1 meter away). Values &gt;3-4 diopters=fairly high.

Astigmatism: Astigmatism is one type of refractive error.  Myopia (or nearsightedness), hyperopa (or farsightedness), and astigmatism all can cause refractive error.  Refractive error is what causes a patient to require glasses or contact lenses to see better.  Astigmatism is typically when the cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball.  Glasses, contact, and LASIK can fix this problem.

Astigmatism: This is unusual but certainly is possible especially if the astigmatism is irregular in nature because of a problem with the cornea (window to the eye).  If you are unable to be corrected with glasses, a visit with an ophthalmologist is valuable to determine if an medical condition exists that is causing your severe astigmatism.

Moderately bad: 3 diopters of cylinder is reasonably severe astigmatism.  Not horrible, but not mild either.

Why not contacts or : Contact lenses can treat high degrees of astigmatism as can toric intraocular lens implants.  A specialist in astigmatic contact lens fitting may be needed.  Clear lens extraction with a toric intraocular lens is controversial.

No association: Astigmatism has no relationship to dark adaptation. Dark adaptation gets worse with age. If yours is much worse than similarly aged friends, then you should see an ophthalmologist to have it investigated. It could be a sign of a rare retina disease. (most cases turn out to be normal.).
