Images: "hot" or "cold" is a term related to the appearance on nuclear medicine imaging.  A "hot" nodule is one that is too active, and secretes hormone, but benign.  A cold nodule takes up less tracer.  About 20% of these are malignant, and so they are biopsied.  Cysts will also show up cold as they are fluid rather than tissue, so this study should be interpreted along side an ultrasound.

Nuclear medicine: Term.  Hot or cold nodule refers to the ability of the thyroid lesion to take up radio-labelled iodine and is done by nuclear medicine.  Once the nodule is removed, hot or cold is not an issue and a pathologist will determine what kind of lesion is in the nodule.

Discuss this with Dr: Solid thyroid nodules can be either hot (active) or cold (inactive). Both are only rarely malignant but cold are more often. The various diagnostic methods (labs, biopsies, scans) may or may not fully tell what this one is, but work with your dr and ask for explanations. my thyroid level increased from .92 to 1.2 now 1.63 over 3 year period. had 1cm thyroid nodules a year ago biopsied no result.  hot flashes related?

Question unclear: I am not sure I understand your question. To start, Did you obtain results of thyroid biopsy? If not, you may want to get in contact with the Doctor's office who performed the biopsy to determine what the results were. Please rephrase your question.

i had some cold thyroid nodules years ago.  now my blood work showed 0.06 tsh.  can a cold nodule turn into a hot one, will followup with a t3t4.

Concern with nodule: If you have cold nodule of thyroid , main is concern is not thyroid function which can be managed easily but the nature of the nodule , weather it is benign or malignant. In your next visit most likely you will have  FNA  ( fine needle aspiration ) sample will give the answer . Speak to your doctor Good Luck

Yes: Thyroid nodules occur in up to 50% of the worlds population. Modern ultrasound equipment can detect very small nodules that were not detectable with older machines. Only about 5% of nodules are cancerous. Nodules tend to increase in frequency as one matures.

Methimazole and ptu (propylthiouracil) are pills that block thyroid hormone production, treating b) above. Radioactive  i-131 can shrink/destroy nodule, treating a) and b). Need surgery for c).
