hey there!

i fell of my horse and hit my leg hard... it went a bit blue and formed a bump but i assumed this was just a bruise. it's now been two months and the bump is still there and sore. should i go see a doctor?

Haematoma: The lump is a haematoma or blood collection beneath the skin or in the soft tissue and takes up to 6 months to consolidated and disappear, but there may be residual scarring and pain

Multiple causes:: You may have heel spurs ( calcanceal spurs ) , plantar fasciitis, stress fracture of the calcaneeous or  pain from bearing too much weight.

Where: Is the knot or bump you speak of? The back of the heel? The bottom?

A Heel spur: It could be a heel spur or a retrocalcaneal spur, or a retrocalcaneal cyst on the back of your heel. Have you had a x ray? you need to take a xray, and if you want a NSAID med like Naprosyn or motrin, also check your shoe gear and make sure there no friction with the shoe and the back of your heel.

Plantar fasciitis: There are several things you can do on your own.  But, if they don't work, you will need to go to the podiatrist for help.  Stretch your calf muscle, ice your heel and arch, take an NSAID if you don't have an allergy/intolerance, wear a very good supportive shoe with a good quality otc arch support, avoid barefoot or flat shoes.

Pulled muscle: Sounds like you strained either your calf or distal hamstring muscle/ tendon.See your pcp for evaluation. If he/ she thinks it's necessary u could be referred to an ors for evaluation. Most muscle /tendon injuries take 3-6 wks to heal. Good luck!

See below: Ice/heat/massage is a start. Wear inserts or orthotics in running shoes. A change in running shoes may prove to be helpful. Stretching exercises may also be of benefit. If this persists or worsens, see podiatrist.

Get evaluated...: This depends on what type of injury you are recovering from.  Strains, sprains, fractures and cartilage problems are all possibilities with this mechanism.

Be evaluated and treated by an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon - one in your area can be found at www.Aofas.Org.

See a podiatrist: It can be due to a number of things- plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinitis, bursitis, stress fracture, arthritis, or tarsal tunnel. The right diagnosis is necessary to properly address this.

Unti then try some runner's stretches, making sure shoes have good arch support and cushion, and are in good repair. Over-the -counter arch supports can help as well. See a podiatrist if these do not help.
