Size matters: The size of hair loss patches can determine treatment. Small patches are often treated with injections of cortisone into the skin of the affected area. Widespread hair loss or very large or numerous patches may be treated with internal cortisone (steroids) either by mouth or given as a shot in the muscle. Sometimes chemicals are used on the surface to cause an allergic reaction and inflammation.

Yes, Many: Injections, topical therapies, steroids and oral therapies can all help, sometimes permanently.  Get to a dermatologist for evaluation.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Hypothyroidism can cause eye brow loss, so get a physical and labwork. And inflammatory conditions can cause hair loss, so those need to be ruled out. I don't think steroid creams would help.

i have anxiety disorder and hyperthyroidism both being treated. will these disorders make it more difficult for my alopecia areata treatments to work ? i have recd injection and oral supplement to take?

: Ask your physcian if tou have "Hashimoto's thyroiditis." (You may need an antibody panel for this.) If you do it can be the cause of the alopecia and it will be more difficult to manage. And, has your hyperthyroidism been treated: it can cause anxiety like features. This is usually evaluated by an endocrinologist.

hi i have had alopecia areata 3 years ago and it started again now due to stress of having to work in a covid19 hotspot. is there anyway that i could get a letter to say that i am at a high risk and to enable me to continue working from home?

No: Alopecia areata is autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles. Most patients get sudden onset hair loss.

YES: So called "patchy" beards have hair growth everywhere but LESS growth in "patches"...ALOPECIA = NO HAIR AT ALL ..that is BALD SPOTS!

i have alopecia areata, when i first found out i had a patch on my head it was small.. but now it's huge! half of my head. what do i do?

See a dermatologist: There is no cure for alopecia areata. Hair often re-grows on its own. Treatment can help the hair re-grow more quickly. A dermatologist may give you corticosteroids, minoxidil, anthralin, diphencyprone (dpcp), and other treatments. Some treatments are combined, but if you would the hair to grow back faster i recommend seeing a dermatologist.

my son has a couple of very small (eraser size or smaller) bald patches. i first discovered them when he was 6 and i gave him a buzz cut. he is now almost 10. they havent changed in size at all over the years. is this a type of alopecia areata?

Yes: It could be. A biopsy must be taken to confirm the diagnosis, it consists on take a tiny sample of the skin to study it.
