See ans: Many possibilities. You need a complete exam and history. For example how was the birth history. Ask your mother if there were any complications in birth like hip dysphasia?  The any trauma?  Are heavy or normal weight?  Did you play sports?  Any illnesses?  A complete history must be taken first and then an exam to give you a diagnosis.

Stiffness in am: Sometimes, joints can be stiff when first starting activity.  Joints typically like movement, so when in one position, can be stiff when first getting going.  Arthritis or other joint issues can cause symptoms.  If the discomfort is persistent or worsening, would recommend an evaluation.

Tendinitis/Bursitis: There are many reasons to get pain in hip while lying on you side but most common that i see id tendinitis/bursitis of hip, infection , back roblems can also cause the same plus many other reason as well.

Do you have any: medical problems? are you overweight? if not any of these, they just could be growing pains.  Participating in sports such as swimming could help alleviate it a bit.

Maybe: More common to have pain the the posterior area. In the anterior area the cause may be a too tight belt, too tight underwear or your posture in sitting.

Hip flexibility: Doing the splits requires excellent flexibility of the muscles and tendons around your hip.  Pain after trying to do the splits may simply indicate that you need to stretch more thoroughly.  If you experienced a sudden onset of pain after trying to do the splits, you may have in fact pulled a muscle.

Hip pain: Hip pain can be arthritis, but at 17 unlikely unless you would have concern for an autoimmune problem such as rheumatoid arthritis. Slipped capitus femoris and perthes disease are more for younger group.  Hip bruise or a trochanteric bursitis more likely. Another common problem would be tensor fascia lata.

Bursitis: a trochanteric bursitis often causes tenderness in that area.
