i had acl reconstructive surgery using my hamstring yesterday. i have been experiencing hip pain, is this normal? if so what can i do to alleviate it?

Possible bursitis: Pain on the outside of the hip over your bony bump of your hip bone could be hip or greater trochanter bursitis.  Upper buttock or buttock pain could be a low back strain or sciatica. Groin pain would be unusual at your age and could represent a label tear or other hip joint pathology. You probably have bursitis or back issues. Your therapist  could help you with stretches and strengthening exerc.

Unusual: Since acl surgery is focused on the knee, it is unusual that you would have foot pain.  Common approach would be rest, ice, compression, and elevation but if no response get it checked.

See a doctor: If you are having knee pain years after acl reconstruction you may have developed arthritis in the knee. See your orthopedic surgeon for evaluation.

6-9 months: There are 2 considerations for recovery after acl reconstruction. First is the immediate surgery recovery, which can vary depending on surgeon and whether your own tendon is used. Generally you can be walking normally somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. More importantly, the graft does not reincorporate until 6-8 months for your own and 8-9 months for donor graft. You cannot be pivoting before then.

Normal: Our goal for acl reconstruction is to return you to your pre-injury state. Our studies show 50-70% or patients get back to their previous level of activity.

ACL Reconstruction: Acl tears do not heal on their own & having it replaced can help you maintain a healthy/ active lifestyle in the years to come. The acl is a major knee stabalizer, and can provide security to your knee that may prevent further damage to nearby tendons, ligaments, muscles, articular cartilage, meniscus, & bones when compared to a "loose knee"

Acl: Recovery after acl sugery is a progression and each surgeon will have a specific protocol for u to follow pending on the type of graft and preferences.  Consult yr surgeon for specific answer.

is it safe for me to be showering after acl surgery?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: You should check with your surgeon. For my patients i let them shower 24hours after surgery. Some physicians like to wait longer, to make sure you don't get an infection or fall in the shower and hurt your knee again.
