First : First of all my congratulations to you for going forward with the hip graft.  This is the best source of large amounts of bone for jaw reconstruction, and in my experience we get the best results harvesting the bone from the hip.  You are going to be limping for about three weeks at which time the stitches will be out of your hip and your mouth.  I am actually amazed by how uneventful these recovery times are.  The greatest inconvenience is not being able to shower or get the wound on the hip wet.

Depends: It depends on the extent of defect and what the dentist is trying to accomplish.
The dentist can always obtain autogenous bone intraorally.  Also cadaver bone has been shown to be very effective in treating most bonegrafting needs for purposes of creating bone needed for dental implants.  I personally feel using bone from the hip is too morbid for the patient.

Good idea: The incision should be healed to the point where the sutures can be removed at approximately 10 days. The hip is often exposed to minor trauma so would leave covered until then

Yes, but: Harvesting a bone graft removes bone, but most of the time you cannot tell. It depends on what part of the pelvis the bone comes from, how much bone is removed, how much soft tissue covers the area (skin, fat, muscle). If a doctor is talking to you about a bone graft harvest, talk to them about your concerns.

What?: It's not clear what your question is asking.  When you do a hip replacement, a bone braft may be carried out to supplement inadequate bone loss.  Frequently your native femoral head, which would other wise be removed and discarded, is morselized and used to fill in cysts or other voids.  A hip replacement is an artificial device, so you can't get bone graft from that.

Quite Painful : It is quite painful and can cause disturbances in your ability to walk for a while. It's also necessary to stay in the hospital for at least a day following surgery. The good thing is that it is almost never necessary any more. If you would like a referral, i know a brilliant implant surgeon in your city who can help you or at least do a second opinion. His consultations are free for implants!

Varies: Unfortunately there is not one correct answer.  In other words, some patients will have very little or even no pain, whereas other patients will continue to have severe pain.  Also unfortunately, a bone graft from the hip is a well known cause of postop pain which can be persistent.  If your pain is really severe, you should of course see your surgeon and have x-rays and an examination.
