: IgG antibodies indicate long term exposure to either HSVI or HSV II.  IgM antibodies are due to a recent outbreak of HSV I or HSV II exposure acquired sexually.

my igg type specific test results were hsv1: 50.40 and hsv2: 17.60. this means i have both viruses correct? i'm confused why they are so high.

IgG = past infection: IgG antibodies typically develop later on, and usually indicate a past infection (ie, you didn't recently get infected).  So when someone has IgG antibodies, they've had the infection at some point, and with herpes, the virus remains and can get activated which is why sores come.  Titers that are independently high for both mean both infections in the past at some point.

: It is likely you have HSV1. Up to one third of all people with HSV1 test negative. Two equivocal results suggests you may have the virus, just like half of all adults in the US. If you're not having symptoms of recurrent herpes, either oral or genital, probably you never will and are unlikely to infect others. So really, this isn't something to be worried about.

i had some blood work done and it came back that my hsv1 levels were high, didn't say positive. numbers were 28.30 so does this mean i have hsv1?

: More than half the adults have been infected with HSV 1 and other than occasional cold sores are none the worse for it. So if you have HSV 1 it is not a cause for concern.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it means that like majority of other people you had HSV1 infection. It may cause cold sore with fever.    Wish you good health!

: Do not be concerned. About half of adults have been infected with HSV 1. Most people suffer no ill effects from the infection, other than occasional cold sore.
