ive had lots of lab work due to an upcoming surgery. 5 days ago my platelet volume was 12.7- yesterday it was 13. my platelet count is 236, is this a concern? all other cbc labs were normal although the partial thromboplastin time was high end, 33.

Yes.: Your body has a natural and predictable stress response to surgery.  It is normal for your platelet count to rise after surgery, peaking at about 14 days, and then returning to their previous level over another week or so.

It is very important that a high platelet count be evaluated promptly by a hematologist.

Possibly: Essential thrombocytosis (high platelet count) is associated with increase risk of excessive clotting.  The problem is worse if you become dehydrated.  I had a patient who actually had a stroke attributed to essential thrombocytosis at age 41.  Check in with your doctor soon.

High platelet: How high? Most common causes for high platelet count is reactive, reactive to infection, inflammation, or iron deficiency, etc. Bone marrow disorder (myeloproliferative disorder) is a common blood disorder leading to the persistent elevation in platelet count.

How high?: And how low? Iron deficiency anemia can be associated with an elevation in platelets. Many other possibilities.  Need the clinical context.

Why do you ask?: The vast majority of people have each particular lab value in range. A few percent of healthies fall outside at either end. Values far outside are the most suggestive of disease.
