LDL: The real deal: Ldl is the type of cholesterol thought to be the building block of arterial plaques.  It is well known as the 'bad' cholesterol in the most commonly cholesterol panel that is tested on people with risk of heart disease or high cholesterol.  It is most likely high due to genetics more than anything else. It is the least likely component to change with life style changes.

LDL is Genetics: Ldl is about your genetics and there is little you can do to change this risk without medication.  Now, the other components, the HDL and the triglycerides can be significantly improved with diet and exercise, LDL is about your genes. This is what we use statins for: to lower LDL cholesterol.

Life style and meds: Engaging in vigorous exercise, at least 150 minute/week is the best approach. Reduce intake of saturated fats. If you smoke, quit, if you are overweight, lose weight. Yes: Central or visceral adiposity is a risk factor for abnormal cholesterol and high triglycerides, high LDL and low hdl, these fat cell leak out fatty acids that created lipid abnormalities. These fat cells secreted many inflammatory hormones that increase liver problems, increase risk for diabetes, heart disease and gout. This fat also increases risk of cancers such as colon and breast cancer.

Depends if U believe: Eat a well balanced low animal fat diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, & monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, avoiding transfats & hydrogenated fats. No dietary supplement has been shown to prevent heart disease. Statin drugs have. Repeatedly, worldwide, many studies, in men and women. Niacin and fish oils raise HDL (good) cholesterol but unclear if they change outcome. Be thin!
