Poor sugar control: Hemoglobin A1c measures average blood sugar over approximately the past 3 months. It is the measure of how much hemoglobin is attached to sugar molecules in the blood. Sugar in your blood binds to the hemoglobin of the red blood cell and stays there throughout the cell's lifetime (120 days). At high levels of blood sugar, more reacts w/ the hemoglobin, causing an elevated hemoglobin a1c.

It could happen: High A1c means you have a high average bs over the last 2-3 months.  If you checked bs at the wrong tme, sometimes you will get a normal bs number.  The more bs you check, the less likely you will find a normal bs with a high a1c.

Kidney disease?: Not having protein (p) in your urine is a good sign that you have no significant renal disease (r). You failed to note your creatinine level. At age 72, apart from your hypertension and diabetes, your kidney function would not be expected to be normal. Go to a nephrologist to have a 24 hour urine collection to assess your GFR and if you have any p in your urine, that why you'll know if you have r.

High glucose: Both are high.  The glucose (presumably fasting) says "impaired fasting glucose", and the a1c says "diabetes".  
Time to get serious about weight, diet, exercise.  See your doctor.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, why was insulin level tested? It is not a usual test. Rest of your results are normal. If you do not have any symptoms, do not be concerned.

Average blood sugar: Hemoglobin A1c is a measure of the percentage of red blood cells permanently bound to glucose. Normally about 5% of our red cells are glycosolated. If you have greater than 6.5% you are diabetic. It is not affected by fasting, and since our rbc's live 90-120 days, it reflects an average over that time.
