That depends: There are situations in which a falsely high ejection fraction can occur. That is when there is regurgitation (backward flow) of blood in the left ventricle through he mitral valve, or in the rare event of a ventricular septal defect. A normal ejection fraction is 55-75%. Sometimes a high EF can be due to disease such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Or could simply be due to a fit athletic heart.

Accepted Answer

: A high ejection fraction in a hida scan is good.  Anything over 35% indicates normal contraction of the gall bladder with stimulus (like food). This is used to detect gall bladder disease.  It has little to do directly with the liver cells.

Usually  normal: Hyperkinetic or hyperactive gallbladder is not generally accepted as a diagnosis. A  small group of patients (63) was symptomatic with cck infusion with greater than 80% ejection fraction. 28 of these patients underwent removal of gall bladder. 97% of these 28 patients showed improvement in symptoms following surgery. . More published retrospective and prospective studies needed.

hida scan looks normal with ejection at 87% but with moderate bile reflux. what is that and is the ejection rate high?

Bile reflux: Hida scan uses isotope injected intravenously  then extracted from bloodstream by liver  excreted through bile ducts, stored in gb eventually into duodeum. Duodenogastric Redux is bile going from duodenum back into stomach, sometimes causing bile gastritis. 83% high ejection fraction in some patients reported to cause symptoms releived by gb removal. Additional studies needed.

i had a hida scan done result ejection fraction of 35%  i am diabetic pain is worse since test and blood sugars are high is this normal?

HIDA: Cck administration for calculation of gallbladder ejection fraction can cause abdominal pain and cramping when administered.  In addition, stressful situations can adversely affect your glucose levels.  Gallbladder ejection fraction of 35% is borderline low and could be causing your abdominal symptoms.  Many places use 35% as the cutoff for normal gallbladder ejection fraction.

what would cause a high ejection fraction if the echocardiogram was otherwise normal? my ef was 83% but was the only abnormality on the echo. i'm not worried since the dr. didn't really say anything about it. i'm just curious what would cause it?

: The EF is a measurement of the efficiency of the heart and lower than normal values are those most worrisome. However, there are heart conditions that can produce higher than normal values and you should share your concerns with the doc to be sure s/he has excluded that possibility before accepting it as okay.

Accepted Answer

Depends.: A high EF is not in itself harmful.  Certainly depends upon the underlying reason and your physiology at the time of the exam.  Hard to explain here, but if there is no other anatomic abnormality this may have been a normal finding.  You should discuss this with the provider who ordered your test.

Does not add up: Gall bladder ejection fraction is not a usual medical term. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you. It would be prudent to consult your doctor.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. 
Get HPV vaccine, if you are under 27 years of age.

Mitral valve: The test results here do not necessarily lead to any particular conclusion; additional information would be needed to give you advice. Think about a consultation with a cardiologist here on HealthTap or in the office. The ASO is a test indicating a prior Strep infection.  While late complications from Strep infections can affect the heart (rheumatic disease), it does not sound like you have that.

in a highly trained athlete with eccentric hypertrophy of both ventricles, what is the significance of a high ejection fraction (80%) and high fractional shortening (50%)? cardiac output is also high, cardiac index at 6.4 or so?

Accepted Answer

: Depends on whether the study was performed at rest or during exercise. The ejection fraction is usually lower at rest , but may increase during vigorous exercise. A cardiac index of 6.4 , if recorded at rest is much greater than usual unless there is significant bradycardia which may occur in athletes at rest. More detail (resting heart rate, heart size etc) would help to interpret better.
