i have high d-dimer results with no blood clot, what could be wrong?

See below: A positive d-dimer test may be due to many reasons , e.g., female sex; increasing age; black (vs. White) race; Cocaine use; general, limb, or neurologic immobility; hemoptysis; hemodialysis; active malignancy; rheumatoid arthritis; lupus; sickle cell disease;  pregnancy and postpartum state; and abdominal, chest, orthopedic, or other surgery etc. And for unknown reasons.

high d dimer of 480 and no clot. going to see hematologist. what could this be? i'm freaking out! could this be related to my birth control?

D-Dimer: A positive D-dimer just means the body is in the process of breaking down a clot but it doesn't mean it's necessarily an important clot. A bruise or recent surgery can cause it to be elevated and false positives are possible as well. The specificity of a D-dimer for pulmonary embolism or leg clot is only about 50%.

: D-dimer of less than 0.5 mg/L is normal. The process of clotting and dissolving happen in normal individual at any time so a tiny level of d-dimer is present in our serum.

Just a test: D-dimer is one of the parameter used for diagnosis. It can also be elevated in other conditions. So your physician must look at the history to include risk factors/physical exam/US/CT SCAN to make a diagnosis. but in case you do smoke please stop smoking

Positive not useful: A negative d-dimer test is very useful--because it practically tells you no clot. A positive test is not very useful because quite a few conditions cause positive d-dimer test: liver disease, high rheumatoid factor, inflammation, malignancy, trauma, pregnancy, recent surgery as well as advanced age can cause high d-dimer test..

Many things.: D dimer is only elevated when there is clot breakdown…..But that could occur at that low level from a variety of non serious things. Really need to know why the test was drawn to be able to interpret it properly.

We All Make Clots: Numbers are numbers.They have to be contextualized, i.e. placed in perspective in relation to the specific situation,i.e. what's going on with you, i.e. what are your risk factors, i.e. your symptoms,your situation, your past history, i.e. how worried they may be, i.e. they did the test for a reason, i.e. with any doubt, repeat the damned test &amp; look for trend or cut to the chase &amp; make a decision

Cannot say: A negative D-dimer result is good for excluding a clot, but a positive one is not diagnostic of a clot. Do you have any symptoms?

D-dimer: D-dimers can be elevated if the liver isn't functioning well or if there is any sort of clotting going on in the body, either following surgery or to things like dic. You need to see a hematologist to get an accurate diagnosis.

Many causes: Elevated concentrations of plasma D-dimer can be caused by many conditions to include arterial (stroke, atrial fib, etc) or venous blood clots (DVT), pulmonary embolism, infection (sepsis/ inflammatory response), normal pregnancy, pre/eclampsia, malignancy, surgery, tissue necrosis, congestive heart failure, liver disease, intravascular coagulation. Advise following up with your physician.
