Sort of: Herpes in both forms (oral & genital) itself is manageable for most patients with meds. Gential herpes can be very painful during an outbreak but other times not an issue. You can pass it to your partner even without active lesions but some people seem to not get it as easily so your partner can remain negative. Remember, you are not bad because you have it, but you should let partners know.

Depends on the test: A test for antibodies to the virus will be negative if the person acquired the infection very recently.

Contagious but...: Herpes is a contagious std which is at its most contagious when you have active lesions.When lesions are not present, the disease can still be contagious but less so. Things that can reduce the odds of spreading to your partner are avoiding sex with active lesions, using anti-viral suppressive meds daily (your doc can help with this) and condoms, but nothing is perfect. HSV1 positive: Yes. That result means the person is infected with HSV type 1. This is normal; about half of all adults are infected. Most have no symptoms of herpes. If you have no symptoms, it isn't something to worry about.

Both 1 and 2: Sounds like you have an acute infection with herpes 2.  Igm indicated acute infection. The igg will become positive with time. A positive igg  for herpes 1 indicates  prior exposure to herpes 1.

if years ago i was assaulted and received a blood igg herpes test do to herpes-like symptoms that came back negative 2 weeks after exposure and recently i had an exposure and came back positive with swab, is it possible i've had it all this time?

: A positive swab test for HSV2 (likely either PCR or culture) is almost always accurate, so you definitely have genital herpes. Whether it is the result of a past exposure or the recent one can't be known from this information. Symptoms previously and now, as well as more detail about your past IgG antibody tests (timing and the numerical value of the test results) are necessary. Good luck.

if i had a herpes out break and had a blood test done during that time would it be positive? the result was negative. can folliculitis be painful with white bumps?

: For newly acquired HSV, this is possible. Once infected for 3 months, the blood test is positive for life. It does not go back and forth from negative to positive during outbreaks. If you think you acquired HSV over 3 months ago, a negative blood test suggests you do not have herpes and it is not the cause of your "outbreak". However some people with HSV1 never have positive blood tests.

Understandable ...: Your upset is understandable. But, the medical care has to conclude with assessing patient's symptoms which tends to be emotionally subjective and with interpreting provider's physical examination and tests which tends to be professionally objective. So, bring the information on why you think you have herpes to see and talk with Doc time so to deduce possible Dx for reasonable Rx.

: As noted in previous reply, the chance of HSV2 transmission from a single episode of sex is no higher than one in a thousand. Also, your partner should make sure his positive test result is valid. Herpes blood tests OFTEN are unreliable: whether or not he really has it depends on the numerical value of his test result. He should see an expert to confirm whether or not he has HSV2. Good luck.

: Herpes is one strain of a family of viruses well known for their ability to hibernate in the human body indefinitely after the primary infection clears. If you were positive by culture, expect it to reside in your body for life. Taking meds to suppress it can prevent you from being contagious, or seeing outbreaks.
