Most of the time can return to light work in a few days to a week and no heavy lifting or heavy work for 4-6 weeks. Ask your surgeon their recommendations for your specific situation.

Research Yourself!: Speak with your primary care providers, seek out others who have had positive experiences with their surgeries, if you have family or close personal friends with expertise or experience do factor in their opinions, review data on the surgeons complication or failure rates if you can (data available from many hospitals), interview at least two individuals. Not cancer!: It you had had cancer, your surgeon would have told you, relax! But do call your surgeon about the constipation. Maybe a medication you are taking is causing it and can be adjusted.  Lots of fluids, and fiber (plenty of fruits and veggies), less fat, refined sugar, and less animal protein is a better way to eat for all of you, plus your innards.

i was prescribed percocet 10/325 after open hernia surgery friday. but now cant taste or smell.dont feel sick though. is it the opiate?

Probably: It could be the narcotic, or even the general anesthesia. It is not uncommon to experience altered appetite and taste after surgery, even if it was not on your abdomen or intestines. Sometimes it can take many weeks to feel like your appetite and taste are completely back to normal.

It can relieve pain: It can relieve pain and discomfort.  It can prevent obstruction if you have a strangulation.  There are different types of hernias.  Sometimes in the groin sometimes in the abdomen Sometimes within the abdomen.  A lot depends on the type of hernia that you have.  If your doctor recommends surgery, it can help make you feel better but it can limit your activities for up to 6 weeks.
