Not long: Recovery from uncomplicated  inguinal hernia will be very brief , in less than 4 to 6 wks , that is the minimum  time that nature needs to lay down  the collagen fibers to complete the healing process , in mesh repair which  is tension free ,  can be active much earlier

Short: Most umbilical hernia repairs are done outpatient and require a very short recovery.  If you do a lot of liftinig, bending and stooping and straining your time for recovery may be longer (~2-4 weeks).  If you have a less strenuous vocation, then perhaps less than a week to up to 2 weeks.  It will depend on your size, condition, health and complications and your doctor's opinion.

Depends: The size of hernia and the contents of the hernia sac, the presence of serious complications like ascites (fluid in abdomen), incarceration and/or strangulation (bowel trapped in hernia sac) will have large impact on the risk/benefit analysis and the surgical repair and recovery time. Ok to ask your surgery team. Have family with you.

It varies: Usually a couple of weeks for light activity, a month for more strenuous activity.  But, any increase in activity should only be after a follow up evaluation with your doctor.

Consequences: That's the biggest thing to consider.  Small hernias are much easier to repair than large ones .... And especially if you've just had a major hernia repair with a new weakness, it's been 6 months, and an ideal time to repair this small area before it becomes a bigger problem (pun intended!). Stop: you can stop masturbation for a few days. If the groin pain is at site of hernia repair use a heating pad few times a day. If still not better see your surgeon.
