It's possible: There is typically a lot of redundancy in hernia repair, so if one suture tore through the tissue, there should be others to take the load. Also, if mesh was used, this should overlap the hernia by enough that a recurrence should be avoided. Having said that, a strong cough could potentially cause the whole repair to fail. May be infectious: A cough is usually due to a viral or bacterial infection.  Since it is persistent, you need to see your doctor to evaluate and treat this.  A condition called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome could be serious, and you are at risk for contracting this.  Furthermore, coughing increases your intraabdominal pressure, which can lead to a recurrence of the hernia.

Hernia recurrence: Whether the hernia is a recurrence at the original site, or new hernias from laparoscopic incisions, it sounds like you will need to have then repaired. It is unfortunate, but straining, lifting, & coughing can all cause hernias to form or recur.

Possibly: Discomfort under the left rib cage may come from hiatal hernia but may also be due to other things such as gas entrapment in the upper left colon or even from pinched nerves in the rib cage or problem with the base of the left lung. It's best to have your physician examine and advise you,and if he/she feels it's advisable a referral to a gastroenterologist will be made.

? pulled muscle: You could have pain from a pulled peri coastal muscle from coughing.  The pain could be from esophagitis from reflux.  If it does not respond with tincture of time with antacids and nonsteroidals, you should see your physician.
