Severe Anemia: 51 y/o male asks For men if hemoglobin is 5.4 what are the causes for it. That is Severe Anemia Normal hemoglobin range for men usually 12.1 to 15.9. So one is losing blood from somewhere in the body &amp;/or not making enough blood somehow. This is a significant issue which should be brought to the Urgent attention of ones PCP, Gastroenterologist  and/or Hematologist for some form of intervention.

Yes: This is commonplace. Nobody understands all of it, but even drinking a few glasses of water will drop your hemoglobin. As a pathologist / lab physician, i'm always telling people, "look at the person, not the numbers."  thanks for asking.

Find the cause: Anemia has over a hundred different causes. If it's iron deficiency, the cause must be sought -- you don't want to miss bleeding from a cancer or bad stomach ulcer. It may simply be your monthly loss and/or your diet (if you're a non-supplementing vegetarian, expect health issues.) Other anemias warn of serious treatable disease. Let the workup proceed. Erectile dysfunction: I see your main concern is erectile dysfunction at age 30. I am going to assume this is actually hemoglobin a1c levels; your blood hemoglobin is measured in different units. Your level is in the reference range and this rules out diabetes as the cause of your erectile dysfunction. Two causes that are often missed by physicians are prolactinoma ; hemochromatosis. Continue the workup, good luck.

Possible: Your body could be using your iron store to produce red blood cells. You will eventually become anemic though.

my six month old baby boy's neutrophile level is 9.9% where as the normal range is between 25-30. where as his hemoglobin is 11.1%. is it ok?

Depends: Hemoglobin 11.1 is still within normal for age. If the baby had a recent viral infection, the neutrophil count could be low. Really need more information as to why a CBC was done on the baby to advise.

blood results showed high mchc 36.2 (normal range said 31.5 - 35.7).  other stuff ok, hemoglobin was 15.8 (range said 11.1 - 15.9).  mch 32.6 ?

No worry: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, none of your results are a cause for concern. Do follow your doctor's advice for follow-up care. Next time you get the test done, drink a couple of glasses of water in the morning before the test.

Hgb 13.5-17: RBCS 4.3 to 5.5. Make sure the lab is using the units that are the same as USA to compare the numbers
