Very important : The CBC (complete blood count ) gives us lots of information regarding red and white cells as well as platelet count. It's our main test to differentiate different blood disorders as well as monitor for improvement after treatment. Also certain medications can cause the blood counts to become abnormal so we monitor them.

See below: It seems your providers tried to rule in/out celiac disease.  Individuals with thyroiditis, type I diabetes ( history of DM in first degree relative), Down syndrome, William syndrome, Turner syndrome , or IG A deficiency are at higher risk to develop celiac disease.  Screening Test of choice will be TTG (anti-tissue Transglutaminase) IG A antibody.  If positive, intestinal biopsy will be the next.

Complete blood count: CBC w/diff and PLT = complete blood count with differential and platelet count.  A differential is where you look at all the white cells in your blood and classify them according to type.  Platelets are the cells in your blood that help you with normal clotting.

Blood count: The physician order the test wants to be sure that the lab looks at the cells rather than just sending them through the machine, and looks at the platelets as well.  This is good whenever the physician suspects undiagnosed disease.

Take a good breath .: What this means depends on a lot of factors.  Are his blood counts like this repeatedly.  As if this is his first abnormal blood count then it will be important to repeat this to make sure he has consistently low white blood cell and platelet counts.  Your are right. It could mean that something is suppressing his bone marrow and a malignancy is possible but so are many things like infections too.

cbc all normal 2 weeks before microdiskectomy; 2 days post-op, hgb is 13.7 and plt is 132. they were 15.5 and 180 two weeks prior. cause for concern?

No, not likely: Your platelet count is a bit high. But you should get it rechecked before you get too concerned as the counts can fluctuate from one week to the other. We do not get too concerned unless your platelet count is over 500,000 and rising steadily.

Atypical cells: Not impressed but the atypical lymphs are reason enough to to want to repeat the entire  test in a month or two .
