i notice i regularly experience heart palpitations the week before menstruation. could the palpitations be directly related to hormonal changes?

P: premenstrual dysphoric syndrome is a syndrome similar to PMS and can be associated with headaches, joint pain, mode swings, panic attacks, irritability and palpitations.  It is due to hormonal changes which occur with ovulation.  It is treated with drugs that suppress ovulation.

Doctor can evaluate: What we typically call junk food doesn't cause any heart symptoms before, during, or after meals, when compared to any other typical foods we eat. The only exception would be foods or drinks with high levels of caffeine, which can cause palpitations or fast heart rates. Thus, one's primary care doctor can evaluate to find out what the palpitations are, and what might be leading to them.

Strange symptoms: First, be certain that these symptoms are indeed emanating from the heart &amp; are true palpitations. One would check the pulse to see whether it's irregular or rapid at the time of symptoms. Otherwise you'd need to have an EKG at the time of symptoms or wear an outpatient Holter Monitor for 1or 2 days to record heart activity when you note these symptoms. You may instead be having ribcage pinches.

Depends: palpitations refer to a symptom= a sensation of your heart racing or skipping or irregularity. Sometimes one can have a panic attack and "feel" the heart racing when in fact it is not. Best to correlate by trying to correlate with your pulse as that is an accurate reflection of your true heart beat. If your heart beat is fast for no reason,or skipping and irregular you should have it checked out.

Valsalva: There is a condition called supra ventricular tachycardia which can resolve when a person strains and increase the pressure in the neck and the chest as in chewing and stopping breathing when swallowing. This still has to be classified and diagnosed so as not to cause future problems.
