Depends on the cause: A murmur is a type of heart sound the doctor can hear with a stethoscope. Whether nor not a murmur is a birth defect depends on the cause of the sound. If the sound is caused by incorrectly formed arteries, veins, or heart parts, then the problem is a birth defect. On the other hand, many normal children have murmurs but no defects (the murmurs are probably just from the flow of the blood).

Infant murmer: Assume it was heard by a pediatrician. Most infant murmers are benign and resolve over time. You should seek the advice of your pediatrician about the murmer. Sometimes an echocardiogram is obtained to evaluate the murmer and if abnormal then you may be referred to a pediatric cardiologist.

Relatively common: A heart murmur indicates turbulent blood flow, but does not necessarily mean that there is a structural abnormality of the heart (e.g. Congenital heart disease).  In the first few days of life, many normal babies will have heart murmurs; the key point is that these infants need to be evaluated further to make sure that there is no indication of a heart problem.

Rarely: Heart murmurs are common in newborn babies as their circulation changes after birth. Most resolve within weeks.  However, if the baby is blue, cannot feed, has a very rapid breathing rate along with a heart murmur, that is much more concerning.  This should be followed by the baby's pediatrician.

S3 : S3 is the description used for a 3rd heart sound after the typical "lub dub" you hear when listening to the heart.  Young people, athletes, and pregnant women often have an s3 on exam and it is considered completely normal.  It can also be an indicator of congestive heart failure, but patients often have other symptoms such as shortness of breath with exercise or lying down, fatigue, swelling of extremeties, weight gain and fluid retention, and coughing up pink phlegm. Since she is 38, asymptomatic, and recently had a child, it is likely benign.  If she starts to notice any of the symptoms above, she should call her doctor right away.

CONCERN: Might you be the woman? It would surely depend a lot on the cause of that psrticular murmur. Maybe a cardiologist could be more specific about the meaning of the murmur and whether it really was a cause of concern.

No, : No, not necessarily. It is important to understand what the source of your murmur was and you should ask your mom if she knows why you had a murmur. You could also request your medical records from childhood. A murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow within the heart or aorta, and can be caused by certain heart conditions but can also be perfectly normal. If you no longer have a murmur and you have no symptoms of cardiology, then there is probably nothing more that needs to be done.

sometimes i feel my heart beat and then i can feel it moving in my chest, is this bad? i've had a heart murmur when i was a baby so this worries me.

Talk with your Doc: If the murmur you had as a baby did not require any special followup (x-rays, ekg's, echo's etc. ) it is probably not an issue today.If i listen to a kid often enough i will hear a heart murmur at some point & most represent normal hearts doing normal things. If you are preoccupied with your heart, get checked out. A good exam with a trusted doc might quell your anxiety or find something.
