Depends: If the symptoms are present for more than a couple of days (catching, locking, instabilty, feeling like your knee is giving out), than you should have it evaluated.  If you can't move the knee or can't walk on it, then you should go to the er, or be seen sooner.

while brushing my daughters hair i heard a loud pop from her scalp, why did it make a popping noise? she said it didn't hurt her at all.

Accepted Answer

Static electricity: Had to be static electricity discharge. If the hair was dry it can build up a charge and that small arc will make a popping sound. There isnt anything else i can think of that would give a pop. The hair is too flexible so had to be a small shock.  That is my best explanation.

what to do if i heard a loud pop in my neck and it hurts!?

See Doctor: First try nsaids like ibuprofen, aleve and you can even add some tylenol (acetaminophen) to help with pain.  Ice the area for 20 min at a time and see if these help reduce the pain.  If this persists longer than a few days, consider seeing your doctor for stronger medications to help.  Typically most people get better within a few weeks of an injury.  If not better consider further imaging studies to evaluate.

Pop: it was probably a muscle or tendon crossing over bone and should be self limiting and cause you no problem

See the MD: See the MD, either family or urgent care or Orthopedic to examine this and possibly take x-ray image. At your age very important to treat this if there is a problem. Get going and see about this. No stress/strain on this until you are seen. Be wise and get it checked. Good Luck.

i was doing deadlifts and felt and heard a loud pop while bent forward.  this was followed by pain, some numbness, and loss of mobility.  it seems to be where the inner hamstring connects to the sitbone.  it is only acute when extending the hamstring?

Tuberosity: The hamstring which consists of the semimembranous muscle and semitendinois orginates at the pelvic bone on your ischial tuberosity. Likely you have strained or even possibly avulsed the tendon. Your sciatic nerve runs through the area and that is what likely caused the numbeness and pain. In general this should heal in a a week or two.

Depends: If it feels ok do not worry. If it hurts alot and you are having trouble walking go to a doctor.

Accepted Answer

Could be bad.: A loud pop in the knee after a sudden movement (especially a pivot or cut) raises red flags for a ligament tear and/or meniscus injury.  If you didn't have any swelling, significant pain or instability in the knee after hearing the pop, i'd worry less.  If you had swelling and pain right after the injury, see your family doctor!  good luck!

six weeks ago i did the side splits without stretching and heard a loud pop. my hamstring has been tight since. is there irreversible damage?

Hamstring: If it is still hurting 6 weeks after the injury i would suggest having it looked at.  If it is a hamstring injury is in the muscle, they usually do well with rest and therapy.  If the hamstring tendon has pulled off the bone, they will occasionally need to be repaired but most of those also do well with nonoperative treatment.

Be seen: Any cracking sounds like that should be investigated.   See your physician for an exam and diagnosis.
