why do headaches wake me up in the night?

Depends: Sometimes, you have a headache, you go to sleep and wake up headache free. But if you wake up with a headache, either the headache is too severe for sleep to stop it or you develop a new headache during sleep. Headache is a form of pain so it can activate brain activities and wake you up.

Worry? No-Treat? Yes: Headaches waking you up persistently at night may be any number of things from tension type to migraine and there are others.  Your use of the words "many years" suggests that these are likely benign (though i'm certain painful and perhaps even debilitating).  Therefore, should you be worried?  I would say likely not...But i suggest a good headache specialist to get you treated on back to yourself.

my daughter (7) complains of headaches and says she feels nauseous. we suspect it might be migraines, the first time she had this was in february if i'm not mistaken.  specifically she touches her forehead. these headaches wakes her up at night. ?

Worrisome: Any headache that awakes someone from sleep is worrisome. For most headaches including migraines sleep will help it pass. I would have the kid evaluated in the near future. A detailed history of the onset of any symptoms plus other personal &amp; family history would be good to write down &amp; be ready to discuss with the doc.

Zanaflex (tizanidine): If you haven't tried zanaflex, (tizanidine) you might want to give this a go.  Quite frankly, I usually use botox in this scenerio and have about a 90% success rate.

Primary Care/Psych: If you had an evaluation in the ER and there was no cardiac problems, I would start with your Primary Care Physician.   He/She can screen for metabolic problems that can cause these symptoms.
If they keep happening and your tests are negative, they may be panic attacks which may lead to a Psychiatric referral.
A good therapist may also be able to teach you some techniques to deal with panic attack

URI (common cold): Sounds like you're describing an upper respiratory infection or uri. Influenza or flu is accompanied by muscle aches & fever >100. Some describe it as worse cold ever. Strep throat is sore throat w/fever & swollen tonsils w/pus & tender glands w/o cough. Recent study says average duration of cough is 18 days. But if you have any concern for worsening symptoms or shortness of breath, go see doc.

Cold symptoms: Sounds like u have a common cold. How long have u had the symptoms. Soem common colds also give u laryngitis, if ur horseness persists u should see ur doctor. Try some warm soups and salt water gargles.
