Yes: Too much of anything including stretching can be harmful. I recommend stretching exercises a lot however there are some people who are a bit too flexible and risk damage to their joints if they overstretch. Most people have the opposite problem; they are too inflexible.

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are many asanas (position) that help align the spine.  Over time, people who practice regularly, feel they are taller and may have "grown" a half an inch due to the back and neck stretch.  Most of us as we age, compress our spine and feel shorter.

Slow & steady & safe: Neck tightness can be slowly and carefully remedied by gently rotating the neck trying to tough your chin to each shoulder, bending the neck sideways to have the ears touch the shoulders and bending forward with chin toward chest and backward with chin toward the sky.

i was stretching with my arms above my head and i heard a pop, and there was instant pain on the left side of my neck.  is it a pulled muscle or something else?

Accepted Answer

Probably: If it is a simple muscle pull or strain it will get better in a few weeks.  Sometimes the facet joints make noise (pop) but that is usually harmless.

had been doing a lot of intense stretching - now on left side, pain from lower trap, up neck to arms and into head all the way down to forehead gets occasional areas of mild pain. did i injure something? pressing certain areas relieves the pain too.

Sounds like it: Stretching a part of the body too far or too quickly will damage something... and thus cause pain. That's the common sense part. So, to figure out which muscle, tendon, ligament, or some combination of such, got damaged and how to help healing, one can start by seeing her primary care doctor. An Urgent Care doctor can also help. Sometimes, formal physical therapy is needed, but not always.

Cervical neck: the pop may have been a separation of the Uncovertebral ligaments or the release of a negative pressure thought to be between the vertebrae. Radiation to your skull-vertex area may be a greater occipital nerve injury or compression. The pattern is unlike a migraine.

i popped my neck at work, now i have a headache in the back of my head that seems to get better if i stretch my neck and hurts worse when pushed?

Pain neck: pinched cervical nerve Occiput/ C1   trapping greater Occipital  nerve----will give you headaches base of skull or along the side of the head to the forehead----usually goes away with some OTC motrin  If it persists see a chiropractor or an osteopathic doctor and they can adjust the cervical spine

Muscle or not:  this may or may not be muscle. It's hard to tell for sure but the way that the pain seems to move all over the place suggests muscle. You need to see your physician  and get an an evaluation to see if there are any medical issues that could be involved in your symptoms

Need evaluation :  this could be due to the muscles around the neck and perhaps comes from a neck problem. You need to see your physician and clarify that or was there something else that may be having the same symptoms.  Pinching a nerve could've also cause some of these symptoms that's what needs to be evaluated
