congestion thick mucus chills stuffy nose cough feels like there is cold air in my lungs every time i breath. been like this for 2 weeks is this bad?

Cold persistent : You cold has been persistent for 2 weeks and it involves breathing.  I think you should see your family doctor of the one how prescribes the humilin for you if you can see them .  I think you need a chest X-ray .  If you are coughing colored secretions, you will need antibiotics.  See the doctor on Monday or Tuesday.  You will be feeling better by the first of the year. Probably a viral URI: Sounds like a viral upper respiratory infection but you need to have someone look at your throat since this could be tonsillitis/strep.

Flu like sym: Go to urgent  care where they can  test for flu  or   health tap prime and get treatment for  flu - Tamiflu  and possibly antibiotics. F/u/ today as flu can progress very rapidly.

Do you mean phlegm?: Mucus producing tissues line the mouth, nose, sinuses, throat, lungs, GI and GU tract. Mucus acts as a sort of protective blanket preventing tissues from drying out.. Mucus also contains antibodies to fight bacteria, viruses. The color of the viscous substance changes ranging from clear to yellow green to black depending on enzyme from wbcs, pollens, pollution.
Mucus was already in lungs.

can i give my 18 month old a chest congestion medicine? (guaifenesin) she had an ear infection and is done with that now this bad mucus cough!

OTC cold meds: Most over the counter cough and cold preparations in the children's section are FDA approved for children aged 2 years and older.  Guaifenesin is generally regarded as safe as long as not combined with other medications such as decongestants or cough suppressants.  These medications do not treat the illness, they mask the symptoms to promote comfort and rest.

Yes: Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Robitussin are fine. Chicken soup has been proven to really help colds as does vitamin c and rest. Inhaling steam can help the congestion . Hoe you feel better soon. Best wishes for you and the baby.

Mgt: Most episodes of bronchitis are caused by viruses which can also trigger wheezing. 
If you are wheezing, an inhaler called Albuterol is indicated. You may also need to take another medication such as an inhaled steroid, and/or an anti histamine. I would suggest a follow up with your doctor. In the meantime, rest, stay well hydrated, and monitor your temperature.

URI: Those are symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and bronchitis that is likely caused by viruses. I would take OTC relief medications and if not improving or started to have fever see PCP

Decongestant: a decongestant might help, also getting to the cause of the mucous cough- might help, it could be allergies, exposure to mold, reflux- just to name a few conditions. Wouldn't it be better to find the cause than to just put a bandaid on it. Consult with your doctor for more evaluation- a decongestant may contain and antihistamine which could help with allergies.
