Not fatal: Tinea versicolor is not fatal.  Anti-dandruff shampoos will work occasionally, but anti-fungal creams are more effective.  Here are some to try;

: Tinea Versicolor is caused by a yeast called Malassezia globosa or furfur. You picked up the yeast at some point from a natural exposure. It is not considered contagious as a rule and responds to medications.

Topical meds: Having trouble interpreting the autocorrect, but treatment is generally the same. Topical antifungal medications (eg clotrimazole, terbinafine, etc), topical selenium sulfide, and topical zinc pyrithione are well-tolerated first-line therapies for tinea versicolor

Maybe, maybe not: Vitiligo is the complete absence of pigment in an area of skin. Tinea versicolor often shows a light patch of skin but it still contains pigment. There  are other conditions such as ash-leaf spots that exist. A doctor should evaluate to tease out the differences.

Selsun blue: You may try selsun blue shampoo.  Lather every day in the shower for 5 minutes then rinse off.  This is your soap, do not use any other soap.  If this doesn't work then you may need to see your dermatologist for a stronger shampoo or an oral pill.

Doubt the diagnosis: Tunes versicolor shouldn't be that pruritic. Might you have dermatitis herpetiformis?

2% ketoconazole shampoo regimen (lathered over affected and surrounding areas and left on for at least 5 minutes for three days.

Whoa: First, tinea versicolor is a fungus, not a bacterium. Second, culture is famously unreliable as a means of determining that it's gone. Third, the fungus is ubiquitous and returns quickly -- you manage tinea versicolor long-term. Fourth, a single depigmented patch is unlikely to be tinea versicolor. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding or you need a second physician's opinion.
