Not common: It's not common, but certainly does happen. Some individuals have genetically low ldl-c. High hdl-c may occur with exercise (especially young athletes), excessive alcohol use, genetics, etc. There is likely no danger to this combination, although excessive alcohol can have other bad effects. 

Generally speaking, low ldl-c and high hdl-c should protect you from coronary heart disease.

Yes, it does: The total cholesterol is:  LDL + HDL + TG/5.  In this case, that would be 124 + 102 + 40/5 = 124 +102 + 8 = 234.  Numbers are just numbers, without much meaning unless we look at the whole picture.  That said, an HDL (known as good cholesterol) level of 102 is high and is generally a good thing.

Yes, but unlikely: Having an HDL higher than LDL conveys very low risk for heart and blood vessel disease.  There would be no side effects to this condition.  But this situation would likely be a genetic gift! It is difficult to raise your HDL; it is largely genetically fixed. Exercise, healthy fats, whole grains, omega-3's, normal weight, not smoking can help. No drugs at your age:)

total cholesterol 107, ldl 52, triglycerides 63, hdl 49. i exercise, eat clean, and take 10 mg crestor (rosuvastatin). can't seem to move hdl higher. suggestions?

"Good" Cholesterol: Your cholesterol levels are optimal. Goal HDL levels for the general population is &gt;40. A mediterranian style diet and cardiovascular exercise are non-pharmacotherapeutic ways to elevate your hdl. You can also use Niacin as an adjunct, but please speak with your primary care physician.

Gallstones : On ultrasound echogenic foci in the gallbladder are gallstones more than likely.  Hi cholesterol levels require statin therapy. Taking out the gallbladder is the usual therapy for gallstones.  Laporoscopic cholecystectomy is overnight surgery. Oral medication used long ago takes quite some time if it works at all

Pacman: Did you ever play pacman? Hdl is the LDL eating pacman. It helps decrease the total circulating LDL molecules and deliver them to the liver for storage and or disposal. You can not form plaques without inflammation of blood vessel walls and ldl(among other things). So the lower the circulating LDL levels are, the longer it takes to develop blocked arteries.

Lousy vs healthy: Ldl (low denity lipoprotein)  is bad (lousy) cholesterol and deposits in the wall of the arteries and triggers inflammation and atherosclerosis.  It is thus a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
Hdl (high density lipoprotein)  is healthy and is responsible for removing cholesterol from the wall of the arteries and carries it to theliver.   It can thus reduce atherosclerosis and is protective.
