Both work...: But i tend to prefer Cetirizine because I have had a better personal experience and my patients generally do better with this treatment as well. Of course, if you use Loratadine and it is helping, stick with it.

Cetirizine: Both are anti- histamines that help with the symptoms of hay fever. However, both my personal & professional experience has been that Cetirizine is more effective. Every patient is different, so some may respond better to one medication over another. Both are over the counter.

You shouldn't: Both medications are in the same class called non-sedating antihistamines and are effective for 24 hours. They should not be taken at the same time.

Depends: What exactly are your symptoms?  Hay fever may refer to many things such as sore throat, itchy eyes and runny nose.  Sometimes a rash can be present.  If you have a problem that is not hay fever, Cetirizine may not be the best medicine.  Alternatively, a different antihistamine such as loratidine my help

: It is almost a double dose but not dangerous because he takes the extra dose before bed time but he should not expect a significant improvement because these drugs have long half life.

Please use caution: Although it is appropriate in many conditions to take the two medications together, you have to take into consideration that taking two or more similar medications together can cause additional side effects which in this case may include confusion, drowsiness, weakness, dry mouth, dry eyes, blurred vision, constipation and etc. Please use caution while taking them together.

Cetirizine FTW: Most allergists would recommend cetirizine.  It is more effective at controlling symptoms than loratidine.  Cetirizine does make 10-15% of people sleepy, however.

is loratadine less severe than zyrtec (cetirizine)?

Accepted Answer

Loratadine is weaker: When loradine (claritin) was studied the manufacturer selected the lowest dose that gave a response better than placebo but didn't have more side effects than placebo.  This caused it to be a fairly weakly effective med.  As it wasn't studied at higher dose i can't speak to safety of higher doses.  Personally, i find zyrtec (cetirizine) to be much more effective but may be more sedating.
