Examples include: simple transecting of a tendon on the underside of the toe, cutting of bone to resect a portion of the contracted joint to reduce the deformity with possible creation of a surgical fusion. Other procedures may be required to address other joint contractures. Pins may be needed.

The procedures range from soft tissue procedures involving tendon and capsule work  to arthroplasty which is a remodeling of the bone structure to a fusion of the toe to maintain corrected position.  Which procedure is used is by physician choice.

Takes time: Can take up to 6-12 months for swelling to go away. Pt can help regain function of the foot and toes. Take care to wear shoes that fit. Trace out your foot on a piece of paper and overlay a shoe you are thinking of wearing to to make sure it is the right size (most woman wear shoes a bit on the tight side to start with).

Hammertoe blisters: hammertoes are bony deformities due to excessive flex ion of the toes due to the overpowering of the flexor tendons over the extensor tendons. It may be genetic, but tight shoes usually is the culprit causing painful blisters. Try to avoid wearing narrow shoes and heels that put too much pressure on the digits. They will return if you don't change your shoe gear.

Hammer toe surgery: I see my patients in 6-9 days after surgery. If they have any concerns they come in earlier.  Some doctors will see their patients at some point longer that a week. If you have concerns ask your doctor about them.

After: You probably already had xrays when the pins were placed.
