Hallux rigidus: Hallux rigidus is the final stage of degeneration in your great toe joint.  At this point. Depending on your x-rays you have two options. You can have the joint replaced or have the joint fused.  I recommended you obtain weight bearing x-rays and have a foot surgeon take a look at the xrays to give you a better idea of which procedure works for you.

Bend it...: Bend the big to upwards toward your leg.  You should have about 65 degrees of upward motion, it not, it can be hallux limitus (or rigidus).  See a podiatrist for an x-ray and an exam to find out for sure. Then you will also receive a number of treatment options.

Not usually: Hallux rigidus is osteoarthritis(oa) of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.  As it progresses, bone spurs form and the joint becomes very stiff.  Hence, you need oa to have hallux rigidus.  You get early oa from heredity or trauma to the joint.  Unless you have one of these, then it is very unlikely to get hallux rigidus.

It is manifest by pain, stiffness, and often "fullness" about the joint. Plain x-rays are usually sufficient to confirm the diagnosis.  Orthopaedic foot and ankle specialists are optimal sources to diagnose and treat this problem.
