A member asked:

Is hallux rigidus always painful?

3 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Not always. : Hallux rigidity is usually painful because it is really arthritis of the great toe joint. However, just because the x-rays look ugly doesn't mean it is always painful. For some, the joint may stiffen so much that the pain subsides. But for most it is a painful condition.

Usually: Sometimes the degeneration of the joint and proliferation of the bone around the joint can inhibit motion to the joint. At times this limits the movement so much that pain can subside. Most people can't put up with the discomfort long enough for this to occur. Have for foot evaluated by a foot specialists. Visit acfas.Org dr l.
