Need more info: Odd movements are one more "criteria". But socialization deficits are much more important in diagnosis: poor eye-contact, no seeking attention (stretch arms/cuddle), disregard of others, no interactive play, poor emotional reciprocity, poor imaginative play, speech atypicalities, "self-centeredness", poor capacity for empathy. Consult a behavioral pediatrician or child psychiatrist.

Ocd?: It can be a number of things, such as a mannerism, a habit, an expression of anxiety or stress or compulsive behavior. One thing to consider is whether this hair twirling is causing you any discomfort or whether it negatively affects your life or functioning.

Does it itch?: If your scalp itches, you may have seborrheic dermatitis (a dermatologist can tell you if you do, and give you treatment for it). Twirling hair is a habit, as you said -- not the worst habit in the world, but if bothers you, try cutting your hair short enough that you can't twirl it.

This is a habit: This is a habit rather than a compulsion per se. I don't think that it will respond to any type of ocd medication. It is not quite trichotillomania which is where you yank the hair out . You could meet with a psychologist to work on ways to diminish the behavior. This should be a cognitive behavioral therapist. Unlikely: If you twirl with no pressure on the hair root, then this is a harmless activity. Prolonged tension on the root of the hair has been known to inhibit hair growth in some people and repeated hair pulling can also do this.  So twirl away but don't pull on the hair at its attachment.

Not uncommon/maybe: "Counter dependency" is that stage when your kid has started getting around on their own and want you nearby, but doesn't want you interfering in what they are doing. This behavior is not unusual, is seldom done without witnesses, and mostly when they are mad at you.It increases if it grabs your attention, and fades if ignored. This is not specific or predictive of autism. Any kid could be.

A typical 4-month-old smiles, laughs, goos &amp; coos reciprocally, matching open-vowel sounds that you make while looking &amp; smiling at him.
