why does an mra of the neck require contrast, but not the head? i just had a neck one done without contrast...does that mean it was no accurate?

: Imaging decisions are often made based on what answers are being sought from the study.  If you lack confidence in the approach taken, do discuss it directly with the radiologist and ask your question directly.

: MRA = Magnetic resonance angiography. It would pick up whatever would be picked up on a MRI.

Sometimes: Major soft tissue abnormalities might be picked up on the source images (the original images used to reconstruct the vascular images).

Not necessarily: The two are different forms of imagining and each has its strengths.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Angio: If there is no obvious source for TIA other than carotids and with two conflicting studies of the carotids , then if it highly suspicious to be carotid in origin then you need to have conventional angiogram ( catheterization ) which is the gold standard or at least a third study with ct angiogram.

what is the difference between a cta of the brain/neck with contrast vs a mra?

Accepted Answer

: One is done by CT technique (radiation exposure) which requires intravenous contrast and the other is by MR technique (no radiation). I think CT images are probably better.

i had a neck mra with out contrast to check for a carotid dissection. it was clear, but things im reading say you need the contrast to check for a dissection. is this true?

: Instead of "reading", contact your doctor directly and discuss your misgivings, and whether it is appropriate to undergo further studies, such as an angiogram.

would a cta of the head & neck be just as accurate as an mra of the head & neck? even for small things? i've been having head & neck pain all week & got a cta yesterday that was "normal," but still have the pain?

: I think CT angiography is more accurate than MRA in some cases. If you really want to know, angiography is the gold standard for vascular problems. If it is not vascular but orthopedic or muscular in nature, the MRI might be better.
