have h pylori bt triple tx gave me long term anxiety & many side effects. it also failed. not sure i can handle another course. i dont have any symtoms though, so dr says we don't need to treat the h pylori. is this right. what are my cancer risks?

i was prescribed metronidazole with levofloxacin for h pylori. dr switched metronidazole to clarithromycin due to side effects. is the combination ok?

Get Antibiotic Rx.: H.Pylori status is checked with the intention of treating the infection to eradication, when found. Untreated H.pylori may increase your risk of ulceration as well as of stomach cancer.  Don't however confuse a positive H.pylori blood test with actual infection--having the antibody may only mean that at some point you were exposed. Biopsy, breath test, stool antigen assess for active bacteria.

No: If you can eliminate chronic infection, the risk of cancers goes away. But if there is prior damage, then there may still be some slight risk but you need not worry as you are already aware and would know if you developed any renewed symptoms.

H. pylori: Triple therapy is for 10-14 days. The treatment regimens are omeprazole, amoxicillin, and Clarithromycin for 10 days; bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline (BMT) for 14 days; and lansoprazole, amoxicillin, and Clarithromycin for 10 to 14 days. Side effects vary dramatically with the regimens. Discuss with your doctor.
