1st sign of guillain barre? flu shot this am. slight trouble swallowing (have had before. feels like dry mouth ).no weakness or tingling in limbs.

Probably not: The exact cause of guillain-barre syndrome is unknown, but it is often preceded by an infectious illness such as a respiratory infection or the stomach flu. Luckily, guillain-barre syndrome is uncommon, affecting only 1 or 2 people per 100, 000.  You may be dehydrated.  Make sure to be drinking plenty of fluids. To correct dry mouth, otc biotene mouthwash can be swallowed.  Use at least twice daily.

Yes.: There is a risk (though very small) of developing this complication with each season's flu shot. If you have gotten the flu shot in previous years without incident, your risk is probably smaller, but it will never be zero.

Do NOT be concerned: There is a lot of hype regarding a relationship between swine flu vaccines and resultant guillain-barre syndrome, and was finally settled with a superb study published in nejm about 15-20 yrs ago, showing that flu shots have no relationship to development of guillain-barre, which in fact, can be a consequence of influenza a infection.  Get your injection and ignore the "noise".

2-3 weeks: It takes about two to three week after getting a flu shot to, develop which affects one in a million patients.

Maybe: There is some association of guillian-barre syndrome with prior immunizations.  If the individual with this illness had it precipitated by influenza immunization, would avoid repeating this.  If they had not been previously immunized it is not likely this would present a major risk in the future, and influenza can be a very bad illness.

Yes: GB can occur (although rarely)with a viral infection. Neurologic effects are not expected however. If you do have a neurologic issue you need to consult a neurologist.

Probably not GBS: Historically there has been a slight increased risk of GBS following the influenza vaccination (1976).  Since then there is limited good evidence suggesting a relationship. There is even further research showing perhaps a decreased risk of GBS among those vaccinated vs not. Followup with PCP could help identify other possible causes such as a viral illness. Good luck!

Expectant management: Joint pain/muscle pain are common reactions to have after a flu shot. Sometimes even a flu is a common reaction. Guillain barre is a rare complication of vaccinations that is more likely to involve weakness and loss of function of some of your muscles due to a nerve disorder, this usually begins in the hands and feet and moves inward; it does not seem like you have guillain barre. Highly unlikely.

See below:: Treatment of guillain-barré syndrome may include plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy. A respirator may be used if the patient requires assistance to breathe. Physical therapy can begin after the patient recovers limb control.The recovery period: a few weeks or as long as a few years. About 30% may suffer from residual weakness after 3 years.
