Questionable: According to recent studies (srour et al., 2008) there is controversy as to guanfacine’s usefulness in treating tics. There has been success when tic symptoms are occurring with adhd, and as such, Guanfacine and other alpha-2-adrenergic agonists (clonidine) are commonly the first choice for treatment.

See below:: Usual: dizziness, drowsiness, headache, depression, constipation, gas pains, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and nasal congestion may occur. Rare: chest pain, shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the hands or feet, blurred vision, yellowing of the eyes or skin. Cardiovascular side effects include orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, palpitations.

Yes: It depends on which symptom you are treating.  Tetrabenazine is also sometime effective for tics.  For ocd/impulsiveness, the serotonergic antidepressants can be effective.

i have adhd. i've tried multiple medications such as adderall, vyvanse, strattera, ritalin, guanfacine. the adderall, vyvanse, ritalan gave me tics. the strattera gave me hot flashes and the guanfacine made me angry. is there anything else i can take?

: Most medications for ADHD are stimulants, with some variation. Strattera and guanfacine are different.  I would recommend seeing someone who specializes in ADHD treatment, would know the most recent medications being developed, and may be able to work with dosing and new medications, if there are any. Hopefully, you are also seeing someone to give you non-drug strategies for managing your ADHD.

i'm trying to find out more about the drug tenex (guanfacine). my son has been diagnosed with adhd and he's 4. his insurance will not pay for the adhd meds yet.

Tenex (guanfacine): Tenex (guanfacine) is an antihypertensive , but has been used for adhd. Your child is a bit young for the diagnosis. Maybe you should get a second opinion.

Effect is now: Guanfacine works in your brain by reducing the amount of "sympathomimetic tone"; in other words it slows things down.  It is often used for ADHD and for sleep.  Unlike some medications, like antidepressants that can take a few weeks to be fully effective, guanfacine should be effective within the first 2-3 uses.    Give it time though, as behavior modification is also a part of the therapy.
